The Dangers of the Television

We sometimes call it the “Mindless Eye,” and it certainly can have that feature. Some shows are educational, and the news is important, but what does watching a lot of television do? It can do quite a lot of harm without some strategies on our part.

Health Problems: A recent study suggests that four or more hours per day watching television can increase your risk of dieing. The reason? Most of it has to do with sitting. Aside from the lack of exercise, it can allow blood to pool in your limbs and increases the chance of blood clots forming in deep veins.

The new 3D television about to be launched has to have a black box warning on it. It seems it could cause epileptic seizures, damage vision and cause other serious medical conditions. To be honest 2D has similar potential, at least as far as seizures and vision problems.

If you or your children play games on the television, there is another health danger. They can also cause vision problems, but you might want to think about all those repetitive motions made with the hands, fingers and especially thumbs. That puts you at risk of repetitive injury problems, including carpel tunnel syndrome.

If you feel you have the television under control, I would like to point out that we are bombarded with visual information via machines. Computer monitors, iPhones and text messaging should be considered when deciding how much television is watched.

Developmental Problems: Young children watching a lot of television can have developmental delays and it can cause learning problems. It can delay speech, walking and other normal activities of babies and toddlers. The TV set can also slow the process of learning to read, and discourages it, causing our young people to be lazy readers.

That may not seem like a big deal, but there is more to reading than just recognizing the squiggles on paper or screen. Being spoon fed information makes it harder for them to learn to think for themselves. This makes our children vulnerable to advertisers and others who would prefer to control them.

Social Problems: Studies indicate that watching violent and graphic programming causes an increase in aggressiveness and violence in our society. I’m not just talking about our children, though they are the most susceptible to this phenomenon.

If you are forty or over, you may remember a time when you could get three channels if you were lucky, the weather was right and the antennae was aimed in the right direction. That translated to use spending a *lot* of time doing other things. We went outside to play, picked up a book or played a game with the entire family instead of gathering around the television set for hours on end. It might be time for us to go back to the latter scenario, for all of our sakes.
