In a recent series of focus groups conducted for the The Designer Jean Company, women were asked one very specific question, How important are your designer jeans to you? Answers were a rating on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being the least important, I could care less. A 10 rating meant that is was of the utmost importance. The average rating was an 8.4.

Some might feel this level of significance might be more applicable when referring to a house, job, or even our kids, for example. But for those of us who have experienced authentic designer jeans, this makes perfect sense. We NEED them. They are a must-have staple in a wardrobe that can take us from a lunch date, to a soccer-mom outing, to a hot evening out on the town. Our designer jeans can carry us anywhere, with the exception of perhaps weddings and funerals “two of the only places they are probably not appropriate.

There is nothing like that feeling when you’re in one of your favorite pairs of designer jeans, and heading out the door I am beautiful!’, I am sexy!’, I am ready to take on the world!’, I am skinnier than I thought I was last night!’. Once you’ve got the right designer jeans, the rest of the outfit just comes together. All the way down to the shoes whether it is a pair of hot heels, or a comfy pair of Skechers. It all works and looks great.

In the end, there is a very simple explanation for our addiction to designer jeans. It is all about looking fabulous and being comfortable at the same time. This is something that we do for ourselves, and darn it we deserve it! While a compliment from a husband, boyfriend or even other women who notice how cute we look in our designer jeans is always appreciated, it actually isn’t about that. We don’t really need that validation. It’s about feeling special, beautiful and confident. It’s about feeling ready to take on the world. It’s about doing something for ourselves. It’s about knowing that even though you aren’t living in a castle in the French countryside with Brad Pitt (hello Angelina Jolie), you can still spoil yourself a bit.

There are the many different methods of communication available today. Websites, postcards, CD-ROMs, magazines, TV, and movies are all different types of media. Solutions as to how media violence can be controlled is nothing easy to respond to, however throughout the years, a few methods have been presented by experts concerned with this issue.

Nonetheless, media plays a major role in the development of cultural orientations, world views and beliefs. Most studies show that the relation between media violence and “real” violence is interactive: media can contribute to an aggressive culture; people who are already aggressive use the media as further confirmation of their beliefs and attitudes, which, in turn, are reinforced through media content.

As the basis for the study compiled by UNESCO, they have formulated a theory. “Depending on the child’s already existing experiences, values and the cultural environment, media content offers an orientation, a frame of reference which determines the direction of one’s own behavior.” This is relevantly true as viewers do not necessarily adapt what they have observed but they measure their own behavior in terms of distance to perceived media models. For instance, researches say that media violence can also stimulate fear in some children as it frightens them, making the effects long lasting.

Media literacy groups and the entertainment industry argue that censoring artistic images or music will not solve the problems of an already violent society. So rather than censorship, they urge parents and teachers to talk to their children about the consequences of violence and to use technology and warnings such as the V-chip, TV show ratings, and parental warning stickers on music to prevent children from accessing violent material at all.

In some countries, media ratings systems have been legislated or voluntarily enacted by industry groups to identify violent content that may not be suitable for young children. These ratings systems act as guides for parents to make informed decisions about their children’s entertainment selections. Examples of these industry ratings systems include Motion Picture Association of America movie ratings, the TV Parental Guidelines that rate American television shows and the British Board of Film Classification.
