Greatest Car Garage Ever

Greatest Car Garage Ever

This innovative design aims to tackle the growing loss of front gardens to car park space in urban areas. It”s an example of a minimalist contemporary garden that is easily sited in a west London residence.

It shows how a beautiful garden and parking space can be combined to help maintain the aesthetic appearance of a street.

Film Quarterly. Summer 08.

Film Quarterly. Summer 08.

James Naremore has put Pedro Costa’’s Colossal Youth at the top of his list of the best films of 2007. As “a sort of gesture of solidarity,” Jonathan Rosenbaum is running his piece on Casa de Lava.

“We want to spark convivial debate and dissent,” writes Rob White in the editorial opening the new issue of Film Quarterly. “In that spirit, Leo Braudy initiates the new ”Talking Point” column with a skeptical take on No Country for Old Men.”

Also online are David E James on California Video: Artists and Histories and: “[A]ll roads now lead to China,” argues Joshua Clover, and you may be surprised where he finds “the China of our dreams: half cheap, fast, and out-of-control hyper-capitalist production zone; half the last bastion of collective life.”

The Statues Of Dublin And Their Numerous Nicknames

The Statues Of Dublin And Their Numerous Nicknames

Dublin is filled with statues. It seems close to a national obsession in Ireland to erect them. Perhaps not far behind is the predilection of the inhabitants of this fair city to give them nicknames.

And what nicknames. In time for St Patrick”s Day, take a quick tour of some of the notable nicknamed statues of Dublin.

Panasonic show plasma is still kicking

Panasonic show plasma is still kicking

If plasma is dying, it's certainly being dragged down kicking and screaming. Despite Pioneer, the pioneers (sic) of the technology bowing out of the TV business, Panasonic are still continuing with the technology, and certainly in a good way!

The leaked shot you see above is of the Z1, an 56" plasma with physical dimensions only previously seen in LCDs. We really would like to see this sell well, but at $6k I have a feeling it may well not!

Now Happening: Browser Wars

Now Happening: Browser Wars

In case you hadn't noticed, you now have an increasing number of choices when it comes to a vehicle (or browser) in which to surf the web….

Lifehacker pointed out earlier this month a piece in Maximum PC on the currently available major browsers. The piece takes a quick look at features on Internet Explorer (both 7 and 8), Firefox 3 & 3.1, Safari 3 & 4, Opera 9.6 and 10, and Google's Chrome.

The Lifehacker piece offers a nice comparison chart of the features of the different browsers. And to think that I felt some affection for IE6 until recently!

Cupcakes cross the pond

Cupcakes cross the pond

To know that we are ga-ga for cupcakes here in Canada and the U.S., all you have to do is check my reader stats. Consistently each week, my posts about gourmet cupcakes and cupcakes in a jar are among my top read pages (it’s true!).

Well, it seems that our affection for these hand-held cakes was so infectious that it spread to the U.K. (I can only imagine that it was lurking in the ventilation system of some transatlantic airplane). According to this article, cupcakes, long viewed as a treat for kids in England, have transitioned to be a stylish grown-up indulgence featured at weddings, adult birthday parties and posh bake shops more often. Likewise, this cake love has even spread to Italy; according to this blog, Italians are in the throes of cupcake mania, too.  (Still no reports of anyone in Europe serving them at funerals in those countries but perhaps they”ll grow into that practice in time, too.)

All I can say is — what took them so long?
